AFT Scores & Army Promotion Points: How It All Connects

Your AFT score doesn't just determine pass/fail — it directly affects your promotion points. Here's exactly how to maximize your score for career advancement.

Many soldiers focus exclusively on passing the AFT — but your score has direct implications for promotion eligibility and promotion point calculations. Understanding this connection can meaningfully accelerate your career.

How AFT Scores Feed Into Promotion Points

For Enlisted soldiers competing for promotion to SGT and SSG, promotion points are calculated from multiple categories. Physical fitness score is one of them.

Under the AFT system, soldiers can earn up to 60 promotion points based on their total AFT score:

AFT Score RangePromotion Points
500 (perfect score)60 points
450–49950 points
400–44940 points
350–39930 points
300–34920 points
Below 3000 points (also a fail)

Maximizing Each Event for Career Impact

The math is straightforward: every 10 points you add to your AFT total can translate to more promotion points. Here's where most soldiers have the most room to grow:

Deadlift (MDL) — Often Undertrained

Many soldiers spend their training time running and doing push-ups but neglect the deadlift. A focused 8-week strength program can add 40–80 lbs to your 3RM, translating to 10–20 more points on this event alone.

Plank (PLK) — High ROI for Time Invested

The plank requires no equipment and minimal recovery time. Soldiers who hold 3:40+ consistently report only needing 10–15 minutes of daily practice to reach that level. The point difference between a 1:30 hold (60 pts) and a 3:40 hold (100 pts) is 40 points — a massive career impact for a minimal time investment.

Two-Mile Run (2MR) — The Great Equalizer

Aerobic fitness has the widest scoring range of any event. Soldiers who commit to 3 structured runs per week — easy, tempo, and interval — typically improve by 1–2 minutes over a 12-week block. That can be worth 10–30 additional points.

Other Considerations

  • Semi-annual testing: You're tested twice per year. Use the AFT calculator to set specific score targets before each test cycle.
  • Score record validity: Your most recent valid AFT score is what counts for promotion boards — there's always an opportunity to improve.
  • Combat MOS soldiers: Meeting the higher 350 minimum standard already sets you ahead for boards, but pushing toward 450+ is where the real career differentiation happens.
